PT Interactive Producer

Under the direction of the Senior Editor Digital News, the interactive producer is a multimedia journalist who creates and packages daily news items, feature stories and original content for KQED's digital news platforms and social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Next Door.

The interactive producer will create unique, shareable content that can stand alone on the web and social media. This includes, but is not limited to: maps, photo galleries or additional reporting on any KQED News blogs.

The producer manages editorial programming on news front doors, social media accounts and other channels of content distribution. A strong candidate is adept at story selection, headline and tease writing, copyediting, photo selection and editing and audio editing.

This role is part of the KQED interactive news team, creating daily news coverage primarily for, as well as production of original online features and series.

The producer prepares and formats text, photo and audio content for posting on various KQED blogs, web sites, mobile apps, social media platforms and other digital venues. This can include transforming radio scripts / transcripts into blog posts; securing, editing, writing captions for and publishing photographs, including taking photographs; editing, encoding and publishing audio content online; and cross-referencing related editorial material from other KQED departments and content from third-party services.

Essential Functions:

  • Create and aggregate compelling multimedia content on a daily basis that informs and engages our audience. Content types include, but are not limited to blog posts, photo galleries and audio/video components to editorial stories and features.
  • Serve as support for content supplied by staff and freelance contributors. This includes writing headlines and text, editing and adding photos, audio and video, copyediting, publishing and fact-checking online content.
  • Develop strong working relationships with relevant KQED News editorial staff and actively participate in creating online elements for special features or packages.
  • Act as a source of ideas for new products, services and features for the desktop site and mobile experiences.
  • Provides fill-in support when needed for other interactive producers, including overseeing KQED News social media accounts, daily stories and their publication schedules on the News blogs and more.
  • Provides periodic edit support to Interactive News Staff for text stories and web packages.
  • Familiar with SEO.
  • Provides daily/weekly content suggestions to news editor/blogger.
  • Work with internal staff to improve the organization’s skills for creating interactive content (training).
  • Assist in managing online interns.
  • Identify and track key metrics to help evaluate the traffic growth and usage of specific sections of KQED News.
  • Assist in oversight of user-generated content and communities, including blogs, comments and other opportunities for KQED News visitors to share their views and content about the topics we cover.
  • Work Schedule: This Job Description covers two PT jobs. One will cover Fridays 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturdays/Sundays 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. The other covers Saturdays/Sundays 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Mondays 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Knowledge/Experience Required

  • At least three years’ experience working as an online community manager or maintaining a blog or website.
  • Knowledge and practices of social media sites is required.
  • Well informed in a wide range of areas, including current events, arts, culture, film, history, science, and public policy.
  • Ability to multi-task required.
  • Public speaking skills required.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain a wide-range of partnerships.
  • Knowledge & experience maintaining databases.

Knowledge/Experience Desired

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience as a working news journalist.
  • Experience working with different types of digital media content, including audio and video with the ability to perform simple HTML programming and coding.
  • Wide knowledge of Bay Area people, places, partners, and events preferred.
  • Public Media or news content experience desired.
