On-Call: TV Master Control Operator/Ingest Operator

 

The Master Control Operator must be proficient in the use of all broadcast equipment and technology within assigned operating areas to execute live and pre-recorded programming and promos as scheduled. The Master Control Operator will understand & execute these items and more, including but not limited to: protocols for live programs, underwriting and program log documentation, PBS network feeds, media transfers for specific operating conditions, and any required documentation.

The successful candidate will be required to join NABET Local 51.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for proper operation of multiple program channels to ensure continued and seamless program delivery.  
  • Responsible for observation of cable and satellite returns, off-air pictures and audio quality of each channel.
  • Ensure proper operation of all Media Operations Center (MOC) ingest/playout systems, ADC automation system equipment, Telestream Live Capture, Telestream Vantage and Dalet Flex
  • Responsible for satellite records and preparation for automation playback.
  • Responsible for monitoring of PBS network communications and posting problems-comments.
  • Observe and maintain video and audio levels and closed-captioning to FCC specifications
  • Prepare programming, under-writing spots from server for automation system playout. Check timing of segments on programming and consult directly with TV Programming, Traffic and TV Operations management to proactively avoid any potential issues.
  • Prepare discrepancy report describing problems encountered during transmission of program or station break and reason for problems. Describe problems and solutions using thorough, clear and concise language comprehensible to non-technical personnel.
  • Responsible for monitoring of PBS network communications and posting problems-comments.

Other Job Functions:

  • Keep abreast of technology and workflows to create accurate and efficient results in specific assignments or future plans, particularly within KQED’s “Confluence” knowledge-base website.
  • Assigned to operational roles and expected to report on system status for specific areas of responsibility in the Media Operations Center
  • Comply fully with company and/or departmental standard operating procedures. May support the updating of SOPs for area
  • Demonstrate sound communication with timely follow up in problem solving scenarios
  • Must be adept at understanding complex information and demonstrate comprehension through operational proficiency
  • Expected to share experiences and offer solutions to standard workflow or system problems
  • Expected to initiate productive interactions with operational counterparts and closely related support departments. Together, complete the expected assignments based upon timelines and pre-determined guidelines
  • Communicate regularly with direct Supervisor and/or Manager in compliance with departmental guidelines
  • Provide quality service in assigned area to all customers, as defined and assigned by management
  • As necessary, participate in team based projects and contribute recommendations for the departmental objectives

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • A minimum of 4 years practical TV Master Control, production or related experience.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Flexibility to alter shifts/days off and work overtime to accommodate projects and departmental objectives.
  • Must demonstrate ability to perform tasks under tight deadlines, work independently and prioritize simultaneous projects.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills are a necessity.
  • Organizational, efficiency and planning skills are required.
  • Ability to work as a part of a team dynamic.
  • Must be willing and able to adapt to constantly changing environment.
  • Candidates must have good computer background (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc…) and strong communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, consultation and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to efficiently communicate across various levels of subject knowledge and understanding

Knowledge/Experience Desired

  • Experience in automated Master Control, Production and Asset Management Systems
  • General knowledge of FCC, Closed Caption and EAS rules and requirements
  • Experience with basic digital TV systems and monitoring equipment including waveform monitors and multi-channel audio monitoring
