Limited-Term: Senior Editor, Investigations

When everyone else is done with a story, do you still ask, “Yes, that’s fine, but why? And what else?” The California Newsroom is hiring a senior investigations editor, someone who is curious  about the programs and policies that shape our lives, with the capacity to analyze data and guide reporters and producers to think critically about how to tell the stories behind the numbers in a way that informs audiences across platforms.

Just look at the recent news cycle; there’s an opportunity to delve further into police misconduct,  or the trail of budget cuts as a result of COVID-19; examine race and equity in education, health care and the workplace or attempt to figure out the persistent problem of homelessness in California — and more.

So what is the California Newsroom? It’s a statewide news partnership of NPR, KQED, Cap Radio, KPCC, KCRW, KPBS and public media organizations across the state.

This position will work with the managing editor of the collaborative, a news app developer and journalists across the state and the country, to establish a statewide investigative unit. This team will focus on projects that expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust across the state, through enterprise reporting and in collaboration with stations and other news outlets throughout California. This position can be located anywhere in the state.

This is a grant funded position for two years. 

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee statewide collaborative newsroom’s investigative reporting, developing stories that will effect change and deepen engagement with our audiences.
  • Serve as a project manager and senior editor for statewide data reporter/developer; and coordinate investigative and beat reporters across the state on high-impact investigative stories.
  • Partner with California stations to develop in-depth enterprise stories and investigations in local communities that have statewide or national implications.
  • Direct and edit high-profile investigations, while also coaching editors at stations around the state to develop and execute investigative pieces.
  • With the California Newsroom managing editor, collaborate with individual stations’ audio and digital teams to determine the most effective strategy for distributing and amplifying our public service work.
  • Work with the NPR investigative team, with an emphasis on strengthening capacity for more public service journalism across the public radio system.

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • At least 8 years of journalism experience.
  • Experience leading and managing diverse people/teams and managing significant projects that have had impact.
  • A proven track record of editing original, complex investigative stories of consequence.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, public speaking ability and demonstrated writing ability.
  • Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously and changing priorities/conditions.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop and guide stories that reflect the full experience of diverse communities.
  • A process to include audience and community engagement into the fabric of the story process.

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

  • Non-English language skills (fluency in Spanish, Mandarin or other languages with large California speaking populations) desired
  • Familiarity with a range of significant regional and statewide public affairs issues and subjects such as government and politics, the economy, education, health, immigration, legal affairs and the environment.
  • Familiarity with audio storytelling or a willingness and desire to learn.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • On occasion, fills in for the managing editor
  • Other duties, as assigned.
