Position Summary:         

The Media Systems Architect is responsible for the architectural system design and deployment of the key production systems through all continuous technology upgrade cycles.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The successful candidate will be required to join National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET) Local 51.

 

Essential Functions:

Assist with project management of strategic systems upgrade projects through the entire project lifecycle from concept inception, solution design, system deployment through to its transition into operation

  • Assist with interaction and tight coordination with internal cross-functional resources, spanning all organizational departments and levels as well as the third parties/vendors/integration teams for the flawless execution of projects
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of comprehensive system design drawing packages, workflow and procedural documentation
  • Serve as a mentor to Radio and TV engineering staff to enable them to grow into operational and support roles as newer software-based technologies replace the traditional broadcast technologies.
  • Assist in the development of project scope and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility.
  • Assist development of a detailed project plan, timeline, resource allocation and coordination; establish metrics to measure and track progress, set up a reporting structure to effectively manage changes with the ability to communicate efficiently with project stakeholders across the organization.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry technology trends to identify, evaluate and select technologies required for solution delivery as well as integration with existing technologies and migration paths for full adoption
  • Maintain awareness of the capabilities of other technical disciplines at KQED so that opportunities to collaborate on solutions can evolve.
  • Perform risk management to minimize project risks
  • Develop and execute a plan to regularly patch systems, including patching emergency zero-day exploits.
  • Develop and execute a plan to backup Broadcast systems.
  • Develop and execute a plan to secure Broadcast systems (select removal from the internet, virus software deployment, etc.)
  • Develop and execute a plan to actively monitor broadcast systems.

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Strong IT/MIS skills with 5+ years of hands-on problem solving.
  • 5+ years of experience in a TV broadcast facility, preferably with daily live production (e.g., news production).
  • Working experience in deployment of asset management and automation systems for broadcast and post production facilities
  • Working experience in design and deployment of shared content exchange and heterogeneous storage architecture for production environments; including but not limited to content ingest, editing, playout and archiving
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD, Visio design applications
  • Proficiency in shared documentation tools, including Excel, Word, Google Sheets, Google Docs.
  • Proficiency in Telestream Vantage, Adobe CC, Evertz Magnum and VistalinkPRO, StorNext, Image Video TSI-4000, etc.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, consultation and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills with the ability to efficiently communicate across various levels of subject knowledge and understanding
  • VMWare and/or Hyper-V virtualization
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows Server, both domain joined and workgroup.
  • Windows File and Print servers.
  • Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Linux experience
  • DNS

Demonstrated experience with backup systems, schemas & software

 

Knowledge/Experience Desired

 

  • Experience with Cisco ‘IOS’ and Arista ‘EOS’ command line interfaces and how to navigate independently through switches and routers’ management ports.
  • Extensive knowledge of current broadcast video standards; SDI, ASI and various codecs (MPEG-H, MPEG-4, MPEG-2), DVB standards, ATSC standards, audio codecs such as MPEG-H, AAC, AC-3, MP3, MP2. 
  • Experience in launching automated Master Control, Production and Asset Management Systems
  • Experience in setting up post production edit suites in fully integrated content sharing environment
  • Working knowledge of video/audio over IP standards; SMPTE-2110, AES67.
  • Project management experience and/or training/certifications
