The On-Call Vertical Video Producer is an experienced, social-first content creator who is comfortable both filming and editing short-form video content and appearing on-camera for hosted explainers, greenscreen videos, and other social-first formats. This role is part of KQED’s Audience Development team and is not a position within the newsroom. Reporting to the Social Media Strategist, this role partners with teams across KQED to create engaging, audience-centric content that reflects KQED’s mission to connect Bay Area audiences to the region and to each other.
Essential Functions:
● Produce 3–4 high-quality vertical videos per week for @KQED’s Instagram and TikTok channels, including ideation, scripting, filming, editing, and publishing.
● Serve as an on-camera host for social-first videos, including greenscreen explainers, walk-and-talk videos, and topical breakdowns.
● Edit short-form videos quickly and creatively, incorporating captions, sound, pacing, transitions, and visual elements native to TikTok and Instagram.
● Film and edit yourself in a variety of settings using smartphone equipment, lighting, and greenscreen.
● Pitch and develop social-first vertical video content on topics focused on the nine Bay Area counties, including:
○ Bay Area culture explainers
○ Bay Area history explainers
○ Bay Curious & The Bay podcast content
○ KQED Live and other local event-driven content
○ Trend-driven, relatable videos
○ Lifestyle and activity recommendations
● Stay current on TikTok and Instagram trends, audio, and memes to inform content ideation.
● Collaborate with editorial, marketing, and program teams to ensure content and scripts are fact-checked, brand-aligned, and timely.
● Use analytics and social performance data to inform content strategy and optimize videos for engagement and reach.
● Create content that meets accessibility standards, including captions and clear audio.
● Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Experience Required:
● Comfortable appearing on-camera in hosted or greenscreen formats for TikTok and Instagram.
● Strong on-camera communication and script-writing skills with the ability to explain topics clearly, conversationally, and with audience appeal.
● Strong video editing skills in mobile apps (CapCut, Instagram/TikTok editors) or desktop equivalents (Premiere Pro, Final Cut) with the ability to edit quickly and in a style aligned with platform best practices.
● Ability to film oneself using smartphone equipment, basic lighting, and greenscreen setups.
● Working knowledge of major social media platforms, especially TikTok and Instagram.
● Ability to research, synthesize, and interpret information quickly.
● Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work independently, remotely, and flexibly.
● Portfolio or links to social video work demonstrating on-camera presence, editing skills, and social-first storytelling required.
Knowledge/Experience Desired:
● Experience with workflow tools such as Google Workspace, Airtable, and Slack.
● Familiarity with or interest in public media.
● Strong visual instincts and a sharp eye for design and aesthetics.
● Experience using Canva or similar tools to create social graphics.
● Curiosity about digital audience behavior and social trends.
● Motion graphics or animation experience is a plus.
● Ability to create content that resonates with diverse Bay Area audiences.
● A love for the Bay Area and its stories.
Physical Demands:
● Ability to lift at least 15 pounds.
● Ability to push, pull, carry, or exert muscle force as needed.
● Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
● Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, and reach.
