Media Technology Engineer

San Francisco, CA
Full Time
TV Engineering

Position Summary:

KQED is looking for a Media Technology professional to join its technical support group. The group supports TV Master Control which uses dedicated servers (HP servers running Windows OS) to play out file-based and live content on four channels 24x7x365.  Additionally, this group supports KQED’s live media creation and media production operations. 90% of the equipment that KQED uses for its master control, media production, and live theater presentations is comprised of servers, NAS, and client PCs.

KQED has a typical business network for administration and other office-related operations and an entire IT staff supporting it.  KQED maintains an entirely separate network for its media (TV, Radio, and Events/Theater) spaces. The Media Technology Engineer will be responsible for working with the Cisco network switches (using iOS) to add VLANs, establish LACP connections, troubleshoot, and other actions.  The Media Technology Engineer will work with a mix of servers that run Windows Server 20xx, RedHat, CentOS, and Ubuntu.  Additionally, two of KQED’s media sub-systems run on Docker Containers, so familiarity with containers is becoming increasingly important.

An essential part of the Media Technology Engineer’s job is interacting with end users of systems that provide graphics, that transfer large files, that provide a shared database of content and other functions unique to a media-based operation.  A solid IT skillset will enable the successful candidate to add the particular knowledge of how the systems are used and the ‘language’ and terms used to describe issues with the operation of these systems.

While KQED desires a candidate that has already worked with media-based systems, KQED would also value a candidate with solid IT skills who is eager to expand the use of those skills in this media-oriented environment.

Salary range information will be provided to applicants who are contacted for an interview

One of our core values at KQED is that we are better together, and that we commit to learning, growth, and holding ourselves accountable. We value the contributions of marginalized people in society — including Black, Indigenous, and all people of color,  people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ people — and we believe that these communities must be centered in the work we do, and we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The successful candidate will be required to join National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET) Local 51.
