Communications Intern

This is a paid internship, working 16 hours per week from Monday, July 8th, 2024 through Friday, December 20th, 2024. Current Salary is $18.07 per hour.

The Communications Intern supports the Communication Department on a full range of initiatives that may include areas such as public relations, internal communications, government relations, and membership magazine production.

The position reports to the Internal Communications Strategist and will work up to 16 hours per week from July through December, 2024. The format will be a hybrid between working in KQED's state-of-the-art headquarters an average of one day per week and working remotely.

KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media.   We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Responsibilities may include:

Internal Communications

  1. Actively contribute to internal newsletters.
    1. Partner with internal stakeholders to collect, draft and edit articles for a suite of all-staff emails.
    2. Format emails into an internal communication tool (Contact Monkey) and distribute to all staff.  
  2. In partnership with Internal Communications Strategist and IT department, support roll out of internal web site (InfoSite)
    1. Maintain site landing page, ensuring content is up to date and relevant for KQED staff.
    2. Advise and train space owners on functionality, layout and best practices for designing new site spaces. 
    3. Update site design and templates to ensure the tool meets staff needs. 
  3. Partner with internal stakeholders to generate infographics and flyers which provide staff with quick tips and easily digestible guides and resources. 

Public Relations and External Affairs

  1. Support public relations and external affairs efforts in partnership with Communications Director
  1. Create and update media lists in Cision; and distribute media alerts and press releases.
  2. Monitor and report on KQED mentions in the news.
  3. Help collect and organize impact information.

Publishing

  1. Working with the Editorial Manager and Production Manager, support the production of the monthly On KQED magazine and Selects newsletter
    1. Source photos, organize files, proofread, and post the On KQED magazine on Issuu.
    2. Proofread and source images for the KQED Selects email newsletter.

Other Potential Job Functions:

  • Contribute to Powerpoint decks for communications presentations
  • Performs other department tasks, as needed 

Position Qualifications

  1. Interest in internal communications, public relations, and/or publishing 
  2. Excellent attention to detail.
  3. Confident writer and verbal communicator 
  4. Ability to collaborate with stakeholders to understand individual needs and coordinate projects and activities.
  5. Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  6. Comfortable working in Google Suite.
